Leveling Up: Fred’s Journey from Games Grad to Developer

Fred Hudson joined CST shortly after graduating from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) with a Bachelor of Games and Interactive Entertainment. Starting as a technician in CST’s Queensland branch, Fred quickly demonstrated a natural talent for software and user experience design. Thanks to CST’s open and supportive culture, where internal transfers and career development are actively encouraged, he transitioned into a software development role, where he could fully apply his programming skills. Fred explains, “It’s the same skill set, just applied in a different way—designing an industrial interface instead of a fun one.”

Since making the leap, Fred has contributed to several key technology initiatives at CST. Notably, he helped develop a customer reporting app for technicians and a fatigue management and payroll tool. The reporting app standardises data collection in the field, improving both accuracy and efficiency by reducing manual input. The fatigue tool simplifies compliance by streamlining tracking and automating reporting. As a result, it significantly reduces paperwork for field staff and eases administrative workloads, supporting better safety outcomes.

Fred is currently working on the WIM4 Integrator, CST’s next-generation industrial weighing platform. While full project details remain confidential, Fred shares “the project focuses on connectivity, modernisation, and maintainability. One of our goals is to create a single, maintainable codebase that works smoothly across embedded hardware, mobile devices, and desktop environments.”

As an early adopter, CST has already integrated AI for pattern recognition in its current-generation systems, enabling features such as zero imaging, automatic tachometry tracking, and automated calibration. The company also leverages AI-powered development tools to streamline workflows. “We’re continuing to use AI and pattern recognition in both our products and their development,” says Fred. “By leveraging AI for boilerplate code generation and bug detection, we free up our team to focus on the complex problems at hand.”

Fred’s contributions to the WIM4 Integrator and broader software initiatives help keep CST at the forefront of technological innovation in the industrial weighing sector. These tools not only accelerate development and improve reliability, they empower CST’s engineering teams to focus more deeply on innovation. Looking ahead, CST is actively positioning itself to harness the full potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation.

In addition to his software development work, Fred plays a critical role in managing IT infrastructure for CST’s wholly owned Canadian subsidiary, TD Micronic (TDM). He was instrumental in transitioning TDM onto CST’s internal systems, spending several months on the ground in Vancouver to train and support local technicians. This dual responsibility, spanning software engineering, systems integration, and international operations, highlights Fred’s adaptability and strength in complex project leadership.

Beyond the tech, Fred credits CST’s culture for its flexibility and mutual respect. “It’s very much a give-and-take environment. When you’re asked to jump on a plane to Canada on short notice, they’ll also give you some time off in the snow. Or if you're required on site overnight, the next day becomes a paid recovery day.” This approach reflects CST’s long-standing commitment to employee wellbeing and resilience. Many staff have been with the company for decades, thanks to a culture that emphasises ownership, autonomy, and genuine support.

Fred Hudson's journey at CST embodies the company's innovative spirit and supportive culture. His contributions to software development, IT infrastructure, and training have significantly impacted CST's operations and technological advancements. As CST continues to embrace digitalisation, Fred's role will undoubtedly be pivotal in helping shape the future of the company.
