New Solution to Comparison Accuracy Checking for Bulk Materials
CST Mackay branch Manager Peter Lamb noted that the introduction of this new service product to their Service and Maintenance department had been in response to the needs of bulk material customers who needed a control checking device to compare their site weighers to, but for whom fixed weighbridges were too far away, or required too much time and effort to use. CST's Portable Weighbridge brings the check weigher TO the customer. The Portable Weighbridge can be easily assembled on any hard ground in around 6 hours. For temporary installations steel plates are provided to support the base. Regular jobs are usually set up on concrete footings. The Portable Weighbridge can be assembled using a standard yard crane with 3 tonne lifting capacity.
The weighbridge is a modular design and is shipped on a flat-top semi trailer or low loader. The weighbridge can be set up in 3 configurations, able to handle vehicles from a ten tonne tip truck to an articulated vehicle up to 9 metres long carrying weights up to 60 tonne. Depending on market demand, there are plans to take the maximum load to 120 tonnes.
Sites have found the CST Portable Weighbridge very useful for a variety of reasons. Recently a mine was having difficulty reconciling their product with two different customers. The CST Portable Weighbridge was used as an independent method to test the weighers. Material was loaded into a truck and weighed then passed over the site weighers. The discrepancy with the weighers was within specifications, and the customer was happy with the result.
The Portable Weighbridge has also been set up on remote sites to determine what the losses are in the process. It was not possible to determine these losses previously as there is no belt weigher on the discharge conveyors. The results were positive and the client was again happy with the result.
The CST Portable Weighbridge has also been used to trade certify belt weighers, and is used as an accurate control instrument with its design well within the MPE (maximum permissible error) for the tests.
Peter Lamb noted that the provision of this new service product had been welcomed by customers and enhanced the strong and growing capability of CST's service team in Mackay and Gladstone.
The weighbridge when assembled is then tested using certified test weights, the weighbridge itself is presently not trade certified but can be used as a control instrument with a guaranteed accuracy of better than .08%of full load. Depending on demand the weighbridge may be trade certified in the future.
To date our customers have been pleased with the results from the weighbridge, with the maximum benefit being, that we are able to set it up at any location close to the area of interest. Tests are now easily conducted on material and processes that would otherwise have been too difficult to do so.
Portable Weighbridge configurations:
- A single 30 tonne unit. These are sized to handle a vehicle up to 9 meters long and 3 meters wide, generally a standard ten tonne tip truck.
- The second configuration is a 3 metre wide x18 metre long weighbridge that can accommodate 60 tonnes and a semi tipper truck.
- The third configuration is two separate weighbridges side by side, which can handle loads to 60 tonnes, 9 meters long and any width, generally an articulated vehicle or mine truck. This configuration has a capacity of 60 tonnes. Depending on demand, future plans are to take the maximum load to 120 tonnes.
